Milan is situated in the Po Valley. Its climate is therefore Mediterranean, but with big differences in temperature between winter and summer. Summers can be hot and humid, with temperatures rising above 30°C ( 86°F ) during July and August. The mountains surrounding the city to the north protect it from harsh winters. Autumn can be rainy while spring is normally pleasant with occasional showers in April and May.
