The University for Foreigners of Perugia (Università per stranieri di Perugia) has issued Italian Language Certificates since 1987 and was the first Italian univeristy to venture into the field of certification of Italian as a second language. The CELI (Certificati di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana) and CIC (Certificati di conoscenza dell’Italiano Commerciale) certificates are the only ones accepted for European Certification (ALTE).

International House Milano is an authorized exam centre.

CELI has five levels and starts from level A2. CIC is divided into intermediate CIC and advanced CIC.
